i got you on my time (my time)

At the risk of turning this lifestream-like object into a poor man's MTV, this Minus the Bear song - and the video - is hella kick ass.

daughters of the soho riots

Over the past month or so, I've become fairly obsessed with a band called The National. They remind me of American Music Club - another favorite band.

This is a nice, evocative consumer-generated video for one of their best songs (IMO), "Daughters of the Soho Riots."

shake rogue wave's disease

Rogue Wave's awesome cover of Depeche Mode's "Shake the Disease." Lived on DM's records in high school and thought I was Long Island's answer to Martin Gore, so this is very cool to hear.

Hat tip to @saulcolt for tweeting the link. (http://twitter.com/saulcolt)

in gene we trust

Well hey, if you're gonna deface U.S. currency, it may as well be worth a deuce. This Gene Simmons dollar and a bunch of others (Batman, Ronald McDonald and more) behind the "via" link below the image. Rockin'.

bohemian muppetry

Sure, all the social media nerds (I mean "experts") are spreading this video around on Twitter, but it's still pretty good. This weekend, my daughter watched her first Muppet movie (not THE Muppet Movie but Muppet Treasure Island) so this reminds me of her. I'll have to show it to her over Thanksgiving weekend.

mother of all funk chords

Mashup artist Kutiman remixes YouTube - take a batch of unrelated videos of people playing music, cut 'em together and this is what you get. All audio is the actual sound from the videos - pretty friggin' amazing.

More on YouTube or Kutiman's site: http://www.thruyou.com.

orbital: you lot

Listening to Orbital "You Lot" at 30,000 feet. Haven't listened to the brothers Hartnoll in years. Good shit...

You are becoming Gods
There's a new master of creation, and it's you
You've unraveled DNA
And at the same time, you're cultivating
Bacteria strong enough to kill every living thing
D'you think you are ready for that much power?
You lot? You lot?

hempstead rock city

I'm an unapologetic KISS fan - have been since the 70s (although even I'll admit I took a few years off during the no-make-up years) and have seen the band perform something like a dozen times since 1979.

Tonight makes a dozen and one -- taking the girls to see The Hottest Band in the World at Nassau Coliseum tonight. After a solid week of hard work (while rockin' to the new KISS album Sonic Boom, I must admit) I'm looking forward to a couple of hours of pure, escapist entertainment. And pyrotechnics, of course.

That is, unless the 23-year-old or 6-year-old drag me out 2 minutes into the opening song. If that happens, then this kick ass Jimmy Kimmel Live performance of Detroit Rock City will have to do...

flashback friday

If you’re like me and have an embarrassment of digitized music in iTunes, here’s a fun thing to try: The College Years Smart Playlist. Here’s how to make it.

1. Create a new Smart Playlist (File: New Smart Playlist). I called mine “College Years”.

2. Select “Year” and “is in the range” and put in the year you started college “to” the year you graduated. (If you didn’t go to college, use another date range that’s meaningful to you.)

3. Optional: Omit any song that you skip a lot. Click the plus icon, select “Skip Count” “is less than” and put in a small number (I picked 5). Make sure the top says “Match all of the following rules.” In the end, it should look like this.

4. Click “OK” and enjoy the sounds of your formative years.

My playlist turned out to be 9 gigs of awesome and embarrassing musical throwbacks, heavy on the early hiphop and flannel rock. It’s kept me smiling all week.

What’s on yours?

Happened across this blog post -- sounds like something I'd try just to see to what degree I've held onto some of my bad musical taste from high school and college.

sour makes a sweet music video

Not only a brilliant use of common web-based tech, but a nice experiment in collaboration between artist and fans.

The clip descrip from YouTube:

"This music video was shot for Sour's 'Hibi no Neiro' (Tone of everyday) from their first mini album 'Water Flavor EP'. The cast were selected from the actual Sour fan base, from many countries around the world. Each person and scene was filmed purely via webcam.

Director: Masashi Kawamura + Hal Kirkland + Magico Nakamura + Masayoshi Nakamura

SOUR official site: http://sour-web.com"

social media is the new punk rock

Good video; nice analogy -- although I don't feel nearly as cool as even the least cool Sex Pistol (or even the dude from Flock of Seagulls.)
