honk if you love texting

happy birthday youtube

YouTube is 5 years old. Here is a compilation of the 20 oldest clips on the site. Seems to me the two Chinese guys (The Back Dorm Boys, or whatever they were called) singing "I Want it That Way" raised the bar.

tesla predicted the mobile phone in 1909

It will only be necessary to carry an inexpensive instrument not bigger than a watch, which will enable its bearer to hear anywhere on sea or land for distances of thousands of miles.”

Nikola Tesla predicts the cellphone in a 1909 interview with the New York Times

baby's first cubicle

My daughter loves playing "office", a game that generally involves the employment of some kind of robot to improve productivity and profitability. While I'm sure she would have played with this when she was a bit younger, I have to agree with Gizmodo's assessment that this toy (basically a toddler version of the corporate drone workstation) is a pretty depressing concept.

everything you need to know about chatroulette

... without any of the masturbating men you don't want to know about.

six years in the book of face

All y'all probably know Facebook turned six last week. This handy dandy infographic from Mashable captures all the fun and funky stats about the site. It's pretty much illegible as an embed but you can click to Mashable and get to the full size image for the deets.

the mythical united states of facebook

Click through to the PSFK post for details, but in a nutshell a former Apple engineer digs through the friend networks associated with 210 million Facebook profiles and discovers some trends by region. Interesting stuff.

in gene we trust

Well hey, if you're gonna deface U.S. currency, it may as well be worth a deuce. This Gene Simmons dollar and a bunch of others (Batman, Ronald McDonald and more) behind the "via" link below the image. Rockin'.

sweethearts + twitter = tweethearts

Sweethearts might be the original micro-messager, doling out lovey-dovey phrases short enough to fit on one of their pastel-colored, chalky-tasting candy hearts. This year, the company adds "Tweet Me" to their repertoire of little love notes.

It's nice to see that even a company that has been around for a century and a half can find inspiration in, erm, @gremanda.

the noughties, condensed

2009 twitter trends

Interesting stuff - the top trending topics by category for all of 2009.

decisions @decisions #decisions

the many species of geek

I see myself falling into a few of these - thankfully NOT 'dewey decimal system' though.

bohemian muppetry

Sure, all the social media nerds (I mean "experts") are spreading this video around on Twitter, but it's still pretty good. This weekend, my daughter watched her first Muppet movie (not THE Muppet Movie but Muppet Treasure Island) so this reminds me of her. I'll have to show it to her over Thanksgiving weekend.

on digital storytelling

Nice presentation by Christine W Huang looks at storytelling in the age of Web 2.0. Well done with some nice examples and thought starters (even though I suspect it would benefit from a voiceover.)

today i typed on google

I'm almost three years out of date on this one but today I happened across a now-defunct blog called 'Today I Typed on Google' and think it's dorky-cool. Basically, back in 2007 two bloggers published images of the top Google search result for a bunch of random things. The site provided an interesting window into how easily information on just about any subject -- from the sublime to the ridiculous -- can be had with just a few keystrokes. I also love that the authors gave Google a gender: it's a boy... :-)

It was a great concept. Somebody with a little extra time on his hands should be doing this today.

we're all in this together

The 2009 update to MadV's 2007 collaborative video experiment in honor of Guy Fawkes Day. Awesome...

under the dome and across the web

To market his mammoth new novel, Under the Dome, Stephen King is seeding the entire book -- in more than 5,000 microchunks -- across thousands of different third party sites. Very cool.

orbital: you lot

Listening to Orbital "You Lot" at 30,000 feet. Haven't listened to the brothers Hartnoll in years. Good shit...

You are becoming Gods
There's a new master of creation, and it's you
You've unraveled DNA
And at the same time, you're cultivating
Bacteria strong enough to kill every living thing
D'you think you are ready for that much power?
You lot? You lot?
