Wow the guy really was a genius. I have an old Eagle annual from 1953 where he wrote an article discussing if space travel was possible. It is fascinating stuff. what I think is interesting is how this was interpreted. I remember being told when I was young that I would be able to retire at 40 and live in some golden age where robots did it all. In fact then concern was how we would all fill our time. Now retirement ages are being pushed further backwards and we see the prospect of being a poorer generation than our parents. Globalisation seems to have been missing from our predictions, yet I can't imagine that Arthur Clarke would not have realised that the inevitable corollary of this vision would be that that person in Bali would be Balinese. I guess we in the west were suffering from some residual colonialism.
